Chlamydial Infection Statistics
Urogenital chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and ranks second in prevalence after trichomoniasis [1, 2].
According to the World Health Organization, over 90 million new cases of chlamydial infection are registered annually worldwide. The high-risk group includes men and women aged 16 to 40. Statistics show that this disease is identified in half of men and one-third of women [3]. Furthermore, about 6–8% of pregnant women suffer from chlamydia.
In 60–70% of cases, intrapartum infection of the fetus occurs – during passage through the infected birth canal during delivery. Chlamydia trachomatis infection is identified in 17% of cases of perinatal fetal death [4]. Urogenital chlamydia is usually asymptomatic.
However, sometimes in women it manifests as cervicitis and is accompanied by mucopurulent vaginal discharge. Visual examination reveals hyperemia and edema of the cervix, erosions around the os, and lymphoid follicles – a specific sign of chlamydial infection. With further progression of the infectious process, salpingitis, salpingo-oophoritis, and endometritis develop, which are characterized by a prolonged, subacute, and oligosymptomatic course [5, 6, 7].
In men, chlamydial infection typically manifests as urethritis and prostatitis. In long-term urogenital chlamydia, 31% of men develop sexual disorders – weakened erection, decreased sexual sensitivity, and premature ejaculation [8].
