Prevention and treatment of food intolerance in breastfed babies

One of the factors preventing prolonged breastfeeding is the occurrence of food intolerance in these children. The main cause of the resulting allergic diseases (2) is not the proteins of human milk themselves, but the antigens contained within it, which pass into the human milk from the mothers' diets due to the excessive consumption of products with pronounced sensitizing activity (milk, fish and fish products, eggs, nuts, certain types of vegetables and fruits), especially in cases of gastrointestinal disorders in women.
Factors Preventing Prolonged Breastfeeding
Based on the above, an important method for preventing and treating allergic diseases in breastfed children is the correction of the nursing mothers' diets.
Based on literature data, as well as the results of our own research, we have developed the following main principles for the dietary correction of the diets of nursing mothers from the at-risk group (1, 3, 4):
- Complete satisfaction of physiological needs for energy and all essential and non-essential nutrients.
- Elimination from the women's diets throughout the entire breastfeeding period of products with high sensitizing activity (cow's milk, eggs, nuts, citrus fruits, tropical fruits, seafood).
- Replacement of whole cow's milk with fermented milk products or milk from other types of farm animals (goat's).
- Limitation in the women's diets of products rich in extractives, essential oils, spices, condiments, and those containing large amounts of artificial colors, stabilizers, and flavorings.
- Gentle heat treatment of food.
- Individual selection of diets, taking into account the intolerance of specific products and food habits.
Based on these principles, food sets for nursing mothers from groups at risk of developing food allergy were developed (Table 1).
The basis for developing these methods were the food sets for pregnant women and nursing mothers approved by the Moscow City Health Committee in 2002 (3). In accordance with modern scientific understanding of the pathogenesis of food intolerance and food allergy, and the role of individual nutrients in its development, the content of total and easily digestible carbohydrates, as well as salt, which have pro-allergenic effects, was reduced in the diets of mothers from at-risk groups compared to the basic food set.
Due to the significant prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases among women in at-risk groups and the possible adverse effect of an excess of vegetables on the functional state of the intestines, the amount of vegetables in the diet was somewhat limited.
