Candidiasis shares the lead in the structure of infectious diseases of the lower genital tract with bacterial vaginosis. The distinguishing features of CVV are its wide prevalence and high risk of recurrence¹,². This is clearly demonstrated by epidemiological data: according to research results from seven EU states, four out of 10 women encounter this infection at least once in their lifetime, and the recurrence rate of CVV within 12 months varies from 14% to 28% (averaging 23%)³.
More than 70% of healthy women can "boast" the presence of C. albicans in the vaginal biotope. Candida carriage in no way impedes the proliferation of lactobacilli nor increases the risk of other common vaginal infections. It is even suggested that the persistence of these fungi in the vagina holds significant evolutionary importance and that they benefit their "hosts."
For instance, vaginal colonization by C. albicans is more frequently recorded in women with a predominance of lactic acid bacilli than in women with dysbiosis⁴⁻⁶. There is a hypothesis that Candida may even "cover" the mucous membrane, preventing attacks by sexually transmitted infections⁷. Quite an advantage, isn't it?
However, this idyll lasts only for a time⁸–¹⁰. A pathogen, even an opportunistic one, is dangerous, and Candida can "bypass" defense reactions¹¹ and turn them against the macroorganism.
For example, the well-known symptoms of CVV—itching, burning, erythema—are caused by damage to the vaginal epithelium, not by the fungi themselves, but by neutrophils: the leukocytes, arriving at the site of adhesion and invasion, begin to diligently "attack" the epithelial cells.
