Virtually every person has faced the problem of acne eruptions in the pre-pubertal or pubertal period. For some, the appearance of acne is transient, while for others the disease takes a long, severe course. The peak incidence occurs at 15–16 years of age. During puberty, acne is detected in 90% of girls and 100% of boys. Acne appears earlier in girls and later in boys, and is more widespread and severe in boys. Thus, at 12 years of age, acne is observed in 37.1% of girls and 15.4% of boys, while at 16 years of age, it is observed in 38.8% and 53.3%, respectively.
The Problem of Acne Eruptions
Acne disease during adolescence is called acne vulgaris. In most people, after the age of 25–28, the manifestations of acne gradually subside, and the active inflammatory process ends, often leaving cosmetic defects of varying severity (post-acne) [1–6]. Acne eruptions can be present or appear for the first time in adults (acne adultorum).
In 20% of women, a regular appearance of papulopustular eruptions is noted a few days before the start of menstruation, gradually disappearing within 5–7 days at the beginning of the next menstrual cycle. In a number of patients, acne can persist constantly in the form of papulopustular, and less frequently, nodular-cystic eruptions (acne tarda). In the last decade, there has been a trend towards an increase in the number of patients, predominantly women, in whom the onset of acne eruptions occurs at a later age – 25 years and older.
